The Colony was established in 1868 by the German Templers, who came to Israel in the belief that redemption can only take place in the Holy Land. The German Colony in Haifa was the first of several colonies built by this group in Israel.
Below the Colony is Haifa port, and one of Haifa's main roads leads off from the Colony. At the beginning of the 90s the Colony was restored and renovated, and the spectacular Baha'i Shrine and Gardens were built.
